Two binders and a press.
Fernway started in 2009 in a rented corner of a picture framer's shop. The framer has since retired; we took the lease, the good north light and his standing press, which is dated 1911 and still the most useful object in the room.
Who is here
Halina trained in conservation and does most of the repair work — anything involving paste, humidity or a scalpel. Tomas came from letterpress and runs the editions, the foiling and, reluctantly, the accounts.
What we will not do
We will not trim a text block to tidy up the edges of a book that has never been trimmed. We will not replace a sound original spine with a new one because the lettering has faded. If a book is worth more untouched than repaired, we will say so and send you away with it.
Teaching
Four evenings a year we clear the bench and run an introduction to sewn bindings — six people, three hours, everyone goes home with a pamphlet-sewn notebook. Dates go out on the list before they go anywhere else.
